SECTION B

1. Analysis: Technology is doing certain things better than man. It is replacing to some extent certain faculties of man. It is nowhere near replacing man.

· Technology has been aiding man even before civilization. A stone tool is a piece of technology. A wheel is technology.

· With civilisation more of Technology. With iron, with metals..

· Industrial revolution is a huge push in this direction. Machines, level of production, societies unheard of before came into existence.

· Handicrafts out. Production by machines replaced.

· All that meant machines provided superior alternative to man’s physical power. However a strong a man is, machine’s power is superior to his.

· Then came computers. Huge advances. Information Technology.

· Man’s mind power is challenged. Take calculating power of a computer. No man can compete.

· Evolution of Artificial Intelligence. Robots that can self-learn! Robots that can behave as a group! That can evolve!

· The intellect, the most precious faculties of man, are being challenged by machines.

· But even there certain faculties of mind, not mind itself. Not the man in its totality.

· Man’s power of judgement, sense of proportion, his unusual sense of discretion, sense of purpose… so far unbeatable.

· Is that all? Should man be contented that he will always be higher than a machine?

· Not necessary. Biological intelligence too should attempt to grow, like machine intelligence.

· Man too should grow. Particularly in the faculties that machines can’t have.

· A wholly different education is needed for a man. A robot should never dare compete with man.

2. Analysis: What is the crisis India is facing? Is it mainly moral one? Or an economic one?

· What is a moral crisis? Difficult to define. Many ways of looking at morality.

· So we can be clear about economic crisis. What is it? Poverty, malnutrition, slums, farmers suicides, forced displacement, loss of livelihoods … All problems put together call it poverty.

· Then we have one of the fastest growing economies, IT power, space power, wealthy Indians, affluent diaspora…

· Poverty is not due to lack of resources, low level of economy… something else.

· And that means some moral crisis – the creation of a system where the privileged do not care about the less privileged

· Who is immoral is not issue. Whether the system is moral is.

· Immorality at the core of the system. Economic crisis as its manifestation. These are not two types of crisis. Inseparable.

· What should be response. An appropriate economic model.

· People centric. Enhancement of local resources.

· Anna Hazare’s Ralegansiddi as an example.

· To that add the power of technology.

· An economically just society is a moral society.

3. Analysis: what should India be? What are the goals that it should strive? What kind of system it should create?

· not being superpower, not mindless growth, not creation of few wealthy Indians, or few great scientists

· But a just society …

4. Analysis: Capitalism some think helps only the haves. Production goes by the demand and not by the needs of the masses. So socialism was tried as an alternative. But 20th century experience shows socialism did not produce the results. So the world over shift to capitalism. Now new questions asked about the possibilities of capitalism. Can it deliver inclusive growth?

· It produced wealth. Prosperity. Many countries recently moved. Russia, China

· Now India’s reforms. Pushed growth.

· It does deliver growth. Can it be inclusive?

· It depends on two factors 1) if growth is taking place in low-end areas like agriculture 2) if tax income that growth increase is spent of human development

· Amartya Sen gives contrasts between Haryana and HP, where growth in HP led to more development.

· That is to say, growth generated by capitalism can be made inclusive by political process.

· The political process includes 3) state help in filling gaps left by the market. Schools for underprivileged, buses to the remote areas. When market takes care of the better off, state can intervene in areas, not amenable to profit.

· If capitalism is getting bad name, some equate capitalism with crony capitalism – use political connections to have uneven access to resources, destroy other competitors, rob locals, destroy earth, flout norms, get away with all that by bribing the powerful.

· Capitalism is unleashing of competition, based on merit, state as a regulator. Not bad.

· Capitalism in a right political system can indeed generate inclusive growth.

· Capitalism is often get blamed, more so in India, because people do not see an undemocratic political system – that requires lot of money to win power – is distorting working of capitalism.

· The answer is ‘yes’ – but through right politics.
